I have to confess: I'm a penny pincher when it comes to decorating my house. I'm unapologetically enthusiastic about a deal. I shop sale sites, Marshall's, TJ Maxx and Home Goods and I love every minute of it.
Why? It's the way I grew up. My Mom taught me the value of a dollar and how hard it is to make one. Even if I made a million dollars a year, I'd probably still be a cheapskate. Second, it's fun. I love the thrill of a good deal.
Let me give you my perfect example: my Jonathan Adler bedside lamps. They're regularly priced at $275 each. It just so happens that Macy's happens to sell them. When I bought these lamps, they were on sale and I had gift cards from my husband's family. I paid a total of $140 for both of them. Yea, I did a happy dance around my office and another one when I put them in the bedroom.
My second perfect example: my bedding. It's Donna Karan Home. The regular price for the quilt, regular and king shams is $795. I got my set on Rue La La for $250. Score!
Don't get me wrong: if it's amazing, I pay full price. Like my new slipcovers. Those were not on sale. I have to admit before I purchased them, I asked my lovely cousin-in-law who's a interior decorator to price them to see if they were cheaper. She did find a better price for me but I chose to buy local instead. (Thank you again Kara. You are the best!) I love them and the way they changed the look of my room. Plus I like to support local business when I can. I know..that's a conflicting message but it's indicative of how I do things.
Are you a penny pincher or a spendthrift?
